How it plays
The ronin fights on his own. While the phone is down the road keeps going and the coins keep coming, for up to eight hours at the start and longer as you upgrade. When you come back, a screen shows what was earned; take it, or watch a video and take twice.
The battlefield is a woodblock print. Each of the 24 places has its own weather, palette and recorded music. There are 24 bosses, each with thirty seconds and its own theme.
Every yokai you cut goes into the codex. Its completion is a permanent damage multiplier that survives rebirth, more than three times over, and each species climbs a grade at 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000 kills.
Rebirth keeps the codex. Its screen names the life that is ending and gives the next one a line of verse.
There are 25 companions: 24 come from summons and one from the season, and four fight beside the ronin at a time. Equipment comes from night raids and is reforged with stones. Daily and weekly tasks, attendance rewards and seasons run alongside.
The name
Yokaigiri is the romanised form of 妖怪斬り, "yokai cutting": yokai are the spirits and monsters of Japanese folklore, and giri (斬り) is a cut with a blade. It is spelled with -giri, not "yokaigirl". The game is not related to the Yokai Girls manga, to the online RPG Onigiri, or to other games with yokai in their names. In Korean it is 요괴기리.
